Mulled Wine Ingredients :

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine (medium-bodied, like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2-3 star anise
  • 1 orange, sliced (reserve some for garnish)
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1-2 bay leaves (optional)
  • A few black peppercorns (optional)

How to make Mulled Wine :

1

Combine ingredients:In a large pot, pour in the red wine and brandy (if using). Add the honey or sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, orange slices, lemon slices, and any optional spices like bay leaves or peppercorns.

2

Heat gently:Warm the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it is hot but not boiling. Once it starts to steam, lower the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.

3

Taste and adjust:Taste the mulled wine and adjust the sweetness by adding more honey or sugar if needed. You can also add extra brandy if you prefer a stronger drink.

4

Strain and serve:Remove from heat and strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and fruit slices. Pour the wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.

5

Garnish and enjoy:Garnish with extra orange slices or a cinnamon stick. Serve warm and enjoy!

Recipe Notes:

Wine Choice:Use a red wine you enjoy drinking, but avoid overly expensive ones since the spices will alter the flavors.

Sweetness Level:You can adjust the amount of honey or sugar depending on your taste—some like it sweeter, others prefer a more savory version.

Slow Cooker Option:You can also make mulled wine in a slow cooker by adding all the ingredients and setting it to low for 2-3 hours.

Non-Alcoholic Version:For a non-alcoholic version, replace the wine with grape juice or apple cider and omit the brandy.
