Mulled Wine Ingredients :

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) red wine (medium-bodied, like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2-3 star anise
  • 1 orange, sliced (reserve some for garnish)
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1-2 bay leaves (optional)
  • A few black peppercorns (optional)

How to make Mulled Wine :

1

Combine ingredients:In a large pot, pour in the red wine and brandy (if using). Add the honey or sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, orange slices, lemon slices, and any optional spices like bay leaves or peppercorns.

2

Heat gently:Warm the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it is hot but not boiling. Once it starts to steam, lower the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse.

3

Taste and adjust:Taste the mulled wine and adjust the sweetness by adding more honey or sugar if needed. You can also add extra brandy if you prefer a stronger drink.

4

Strain and serve:Remove from heat and strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and fruit slices. Pour the wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.

5

Garnish and enjoy:Garnish with extra orange slices or a cinnamon stick. Serve warm and enjoy!

Recipe Notes:

Make-ahead holiday drink: Infuse the wine with spices a few hours early for even deeper flavor.

Non-alcoholic version: Swap red wine for grape juice or apple cider, and dilute slightly—still delicious and festive.

Slow-cooker friendly: Keep the mulled wine warm on low throughout parties—just avoid letting it boil to preserve flavor and prevent bitterness.
