For the Steak:
- 1 lb flank steak (or sirloin)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Optional: garlic powder, onion powder, or your favorite seasoning
For the Sandwich:
- 2 crusty rolls or baguettes
- 1 onion, sliced
- 1 bell pepper, sliced (optional)
- Cheese (like provolone, cheddar, or Swiss)
- Lettuce or arugula (optional)
- Condiments (like mayonnaise, mustard, or aioli)
Prepare the Steak:
Season the flank steak with salt, pepper, and any additional seasonings.
Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steak and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare, or longer if you prefer it more well done.
Sauté the Vegetables:
In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and bell pepper.
Cook until they are soft and caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
Rest the Steak:
Remove the steak from the skillet and let it rest for a few minutes.
This helps retain the juices. Then, slice it thinly against the grain.
Assemble the Sandwich:
Slice the rolls in half. If desired, you can toast them lightly.
Layer the sliced steak on the bottom half of each roll.
Top with sautéed onions and peppers, and add cheese on top.
If you’re using the oven, you can place the sandwiches under the broiler for a couple of minutes to melt the cheese.
Finish:
Add any greens or condiments you like, then close the sandwich with the top half of the roll.
Serve:
Cut the sandwiches in half and enjoy!
