- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp paprika (sweet or smoked)
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup sour cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1-2 tbsp all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)
Prepare Ingredients:
Season Chicken: Season chicken pieces with salt and pepper.
Sauté Onions and Garlic:
Heat Oil: In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat vegetable oil over medium heat.
Cook Onions: Add chopped onions and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add Garlic: Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Brown Chicken:
Add Chicken: Add chicken pieces to the skillet. Cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes per side.
Add Paprika and Broth:
Add Paprika: Sprinkle paprika over the chicken and stir well to coat.
Add Broth: Pour in chicken broth and bring to a simmer.
Simmer:
Simmer: Cover and cook on low heat for 25-30 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and tender.
Finish Sauce:
Thicken (Optional): If you prefer a thicker sauce, mix 1-2 tbsp of flour with a bit of water to form a slurry. Stir this into the sauce and cook for an additional 5 minutes until thickened.
Add Sour Cream: Stir in sour cream and cook for an additional 5 minutes. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve:
Serve: Serve Chicken Paprikash hot with dumplings, egg noodles, or rice.
For the most authentic taste and color, use Hungarian sweet paprika—bright and aromatic.
Traditionally, chicken paprikash is served with nokedli or noodles to soak up the creamy sauce, making for a perfect pairing.
To prevent curdling, temper sour cream by whisking it into a bit of sauce off the heat before stirring it into the skillet.
