Croque Monsieur Recipe – French Special

A Croque Monsieur is a classic French sandwich that combines the rich flavors of melted Gruyère cheese, savory ham, and creamy béchamel sauce, all nestled between two slices of toasted bread. Croque Monsieur Recipe Ingredients:
- 4 slices of bread
- 4 slices of ham
- 1 cup grated cheese (Gruyere or Swiss)
- 1 tablespoon butter (for toasting)
For the sauce:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 cup milk
- Salt and pepper
Make the Sauce:
In a small pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter on medium heat.
Add 2 tablespoons of flour and stir for 1 minute.
Slowly add 1 cup of milk, stirring to avoid lumps.
Cook until the sauce thickens, then add salt and pepper to taste.
Assemble the Sandwich:
Spread the sauce on 2 slices of bread.
Place a slice of ham and a good amount of cheese on top.
Place the other 2 slices of bread on top to make sandwiches.
Toast the Sandwich:
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a pan over medium heat.
Toast each sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
Bake:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Put the sandwiches on a baking sheet and add more sauce and cheese on top.
Bake for 5-7 minutes until the cheese is melted.
Serve:
Take out of the oven, cut, and serve hot!
Recipe Notes:
You can add a fried egg on top to make it a “Croque Madame.”
You can use other cheeses like Cheddar if you prefer.
Thick, sturdy bread works best for this sandwich.
