Apple Pie Ingredients :

  • 8 small Granny Smith apples, or as required
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 (9-inch) double-crust pie pastry, thawed

How to Make Apple Pie Recipe :

1

Peel and core the apples, then slice them thinly. Set aside.

2

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C).

3

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour to form a paste and cook until fragrant, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add both sugars and water; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

4

Press one pastry into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie pan. Roll out the remaining pastry so that it overhangs the pie by about 1/2 inch. Cut the pastry into eight 1-inch strips.

5

Arrange the sliced apples in the bottom crust, forming a slight mound. Lay four pastry strips vertically and evenly spaced over the apples, using longer strips in the center and shorter ones at the edges.

6

Create a lattice crust: Fold back the first and third strips so they are almost hanging off the pie. Place one unused strip perpendicularly over the second and fourth strips, then unfold the first and third strips back into place.

7

Fold back the second and fourth vertical strips. Lay another unused strip perpendicularly over the top. Unfold the second and fourth strips back into place.

8

Repeat Steps 6 and 7 to weave in the last two strips of pastry. Fold and trim any excess dough at the edges as needed, pinching to secure.

9

Slowly and gently pour the sugar-butter mixture over the lattice crust, ensuring it covers the sliced apples. Brush some of the mixture onto the lattice, being careful not to let it run off the sides.

10

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and continue baking until the apples are soft, for 35 to 45 minutes.

Recipe Notes

Use a foil drip guard—place a sheet of foil on the oven rack below the pie to catch any leaks and make cleanup effortless.

For even baking, preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) for the first 15 minutes, then reduce to 350°F (175°C) to gently cook the filling while letting the crust bake to a perfect golden.

Let the pie rest for at least 20 minutes after baking; this helps the filling set and makes slicing cleaner.

Adjust the sugar balance by blending half white sugar and half brown sugar for deeper caramel notes and a balanced sweetness in the apples.
