Churros con Chocolate Recipe – Mexican Special

Churros con Chocolate is one of Spain’s most beloved breakfast or snack treats—golden, crispy fried dough sticks dusted with sugar and served with a thick, rich, hot chocolate sauce for dipping. Crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and deeply indulgent when paired with that luscious chocolate, churros are perfect for fiestas, holidays, or anytime you need a warm, comforting bite.

For the Churros:

  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/2 cup sugar + 1 tsp cinnamon (for coating)

For the Chocolate Sauce:

  • 100g (3.5 oz) dark chocolate (60–70% cocoa)
  • 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
  • 1 tsp cornstarch (for thickening)
  • 1–2 tbsp sugar (to taste)
  • Pinch of salt

Make the Churro Dough:

1

In a saucepan, bring water, sugar, butter, and salt to a boil.

2

Add flour all at once, stirring vigorously until a smooth dough forms and pulls away from the sides.

3

Remove from heat and cool for 5–10 minutes.

4

Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, until glossy and pipeable.

5

Stir in vanilla.

Fry the Churros:

6

Heat oil in a deep pan to 180°C (350°F).

7

Transfer dough to a piping bag fitted with a star tip.

8

Pipe 4–5 inch strips into the hot oil (use scissors to cut the dough).

9

Fry until golden brown, 2–3 minutes per side.

10

Drain on paper towels, then roll in cinnamon sugar.

Make the Chocolate Sauce:

11

In a saucepan, combine milk and cornstarch. Stir until smooth.

12

Heat gently, then add chocolate, sugar, and salt.

13

Stir until thick, smooth, and glossy.

14

Serve warm in a cup or bowl alongside churros.

Recipe Notes :

Egg-Free Version: Traditional Spanish churros sometimes skip eggs—feel free to omit them for a simpler dough.

Thicker Sauce: Use less milk or more cornstarch for a denser dip, like Spanish chocolate a la taza.

Storage: Best enjoyed fresh, but leftover churros can be reheated in the oven.

Serving Tip: Dust churros just before serving so they stay crisp.
