Obatzda Ingredients:

  • Camembert Cheese: 1 (8-ounce or 225 grams), softened
  • Butter: 1/2 cup (115 grams), softened
  • Cream Cheese: 2 tablespoons
  • Onion: 1 small, finely chopped
  • Paprika: 1 tablespoon
  • Caraway Seeds: 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Salt: to taste
  • Black Pepper: to taste
  • Chives or Parsley: for garnish (optional)

How to make Obatzda::

1

Mix: In a bowl, combine the softened Camembert cheese, butter, and cream cheese. Mash together until smooth.

2

Add: Stir in the finely chopped onion, paprika, caraway seeds (if using), salt, and black pepper.

3

Serve: Garnish with chopped chives or parsley, if desired.

Recipe Notes:

Use ripe Camembert (or Brie if needed) and let it come to room temperature for easier mixing.

Blend or mash cheese with softened butter to get a creamy yet slightly chunky texture.

Add finely chopped onion and optionally caraway seeds or a little horseradish for aromatic depth.

Paprika (sweet or a mix with a touch of spicy) gives Obatzda its signature color and flavor—start mild and adjust.

Incorporate a splash of beer to loosen texture and add flavor; non-alcoholic beer or milk can be used for milder versions.

Chill the spread for at least an hour so flavors meld; taste and adjust seasoning before serving.

Serve with warm pretzels, crusty rye bread, or fresh vegetables as dippers.
