Tlayudas Recipe – Mexican Special

Tlayudas are a classic dish from Mexican cuisine, often called the “Oaxacan pizza” for their large, thin tortillas loaded with refried beans, melty cheese, meats, and fresh vegetables. Tlayudas Ingredients:

  • 2 large corn tortillas (30 cm / 12-inch diameter, preferably Oaxacan style)
  • 1 cup refried black beans
  • 150g (5 oz) Oaxaca cheese or mozzarella, shredded
  • 100g (3.5 oz) cooked meat (chorizo, shredded chicken, or beef)
  • 1/2 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 cup sliced tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup sliced avocado
  • 2 tbsp pickled red onions (optional)
  • 1–2 tsp vegetable oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Hot sauce, for serving

Tlayudas Instructions:

Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat; lightly brush tortillas with oil.

Warm tortillas for 1–2 minutes until slightly crisp.

Spread a layer of refried beans evenly over each tortilla.

Sprinkle shredded cheese over the beans.

Add cooked meat evenly on top of cheese.

Cover with a lid or aluminum foil for 2–3 minutes to melt cheese.

Remove from heat; top with lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and pickled onions.

Season with salt and serve immediately with hot sauce.
