For the Dough:
- 2 1/4 tsp (7g) active dry yeast
- 1 cup (240ml) warm water
- 1/2 cup (120ml) warm milk
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp cornstarch (optional, for extra crispness)
For Frying:
- Vegetable or sunflower oil (for deep frying)
For the Syrup:
- 1/2 cup (120ml) honey
- 1/4 cup (60ml) water
- 1/4 cup (50g) sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp lemon juice
Toppings (optional):
- Ground cinnamon
- Crushed walnuts or pistachios
- Sesame seeds
Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water and milk. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Add flour, salt, and cornstarch (if using). Mix until smooth and elastic—dough will be loose and sticky.
Cover and let rise in a warm spot for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Prepare the Syrup:
In a small saucepan, combine honey, sugar, water, lemon juice, and cinnamon.
Simmer for 5–6 minutes until slightly thickened. Set aside and keep warm.
Fry the Loukoumades:
Heat oil in a deep pot to 180°C (350°F).
Using a spoon or your hand, drop small portions of dough into the hot oil (wetting the spoon helps prevent sticking).
Fry in batches for 3–4 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
Drain on paper towels briefly.
Soak & Serve:
While still warm, dip the loukoumades in warm honey syrup for a few seconds.
Transfer to a serving plate. Sprinkle with cinnamon and chopped nuts.
Serve immediately—crispy outside, soft and syrupy inside!
